Interview With Dr. Judith Orloff

1. Dr. Judith, in your book, The Ecstasy of Surrender: 12 Surprising Ways Letting Go Can Empower Your Life, you talk about how surrendering is actually empowering. Traditionally the word surrender is considered negative, weak and powerless. Can you explain how and why surrendering is empowering and how women can inculcate this habit?

I am so passionate about writing a book about surrender because, as a physician with more than twenty years of medical practice, I’ve seen that it is the missing part of the equation to happiness, finding a soulmate, and nurturing passion. . I’m intrigued with the idea of surrender, not as defeat or loss—as it is frequently thought of—but as a positive and sexy way of life. Contrary to common stereotypes that equate surrender with weakness, I’m presenting it as a way to empower women. People don’t think surrender will work because they fear giving up power. In this book I want readers to experience the elegant balance of knowing when to exert control in their lives and when to let go. This is the secret to success and relationship bliss. There is nothing more sexy and attractive than a woman who know when to assert control and when to surrender–it is a critical balance to achieve. It can be a turn off to be over-controlling, push too hard and pressure others. Women can practice surrender by breathing, tuning into their bodies and listening to intuitive signals about how to proceed in any situation. Women can surrender by letting go to life, flowing with what is instead of fighting life. Surrender to love without guarding your heart, surrender to sexuality and sensuality and the wonder of life. Surrender is about flowing with relationships and success rather than micromanaging every detail.

2. One of the biggest problems our subscribers face in their love lives is not getting the desired level of commitment from their partners. They are so attracted by the incredible chemistry that they feel in their relationships that they fail to notice the red flags, make excuses for him and wait with the hope that things would change for the better. What can women do to overcome this problem?

In The Ecstasy of Surrender I write about how to break the attraction to unavailable people who I call EUPs. Women need to know that just because they feel an incredible chemistry with someone it doesn’t mean they are emotionally available. In the book I list the redflags to look for with an EUP. They include they can’t commit to you or have feared commitment in the past. They are emotionally distant, shut down or can’t deal with conflict. They keep you compartmentalized and don’t introduce you to friends and family. Don’t put your life on hold for someone who has “potential” but is not actualizing it.

3. Another interesting problem my subscribers face is accepting love. Some of them struggle to switch off their competitive, masculine energy that makes them successful in their careers yet becomes a hindrance in their love lives. What are some changes women can make to receive healthy love?

In The Ecstasy of Surrender I describe how women can balance the masculine and feminine in their love lives. It is a mistake to simply bring your masculine home to your man. Woman need to learn how to shift in their feminine, be more surrendered flowing, emotional, sensual, and not act like a CEO when you come home. Men like to have their own masculine appreciated as well. Comment on how hot your man is, or how much he’s helped you, or what an excellent job he’s done at work. Hug him, be sensual, be in your body, be the Goddess for your man to match the warrior God in him.
